The St Louis Zoo began in 1904 when the St Louis World Fair brought Forest Park to the attention of the citizens of St Louis. After ten days the fair ended and the citizens bought the flight cage which was going to be dismantled and this was the first step to the construction of the Zoo.
The Zoo has grown vastly over the years and there are now a number of different zones which contain animals from all the continents of the world. It has also grown in size as it now covers an area of 90 acres and has over 17,000 animals.
The zones at the zoo are Rivers Edge, The Wild, Discover Corner, Historic Hill, Red Rocks and Lakeside Crossing. There is a good map of the Zoo on their official website, or just click here to view it.
There is a wide range of animals on display from Penguins and Polar Bears to Black rhinos and Cheetahs. If you have children with you then they will probably enjoy the Childrens Zoo where they can pet some animals, hop through water geysers and crawl around the indoor area.
There are a few special attractions throughout the Zoo other than the animals, these include a Sea Lion Show, Motion Simulator and Zooline Railroad which goes on a 1 and a half mile round trip.
